Job Overview
The Sales Agent performs the essential functions of the position, which include prospecting, soliciting, quoting and selling new Personal Lines and Small Commercial accounts. Continuing to counsel and market to existing customers professionally is another essential function of the position.

Requirements
- College education or equivalent insurance experience.
- Friendly and outgoing personality, organizational skills and ability to respond to requests effectively and efficiently.
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing with others to explain complex issues, receive and interpret complex information and respond appropriately.
- Ability to understand written and oral communication and interpret abstract information.
- Property and Casualty License, or ability to obtain within 60 days of employment.
- Full knowledge of insurance products and usages.
- Full knowledge of insurance markets and reference to markets.
- Full knowledge of insurance rating and underwriting procedures.
- Ability to generate new business sales and to close sales in insurance.
- Ability to carry out complex tasks with concrete and abstract variables.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, and to accurately perform simple calculations involving decimals and fractions.
- Ability to utilize computer programs and understand functionality. Computer keyboarding skills.
- Ability to perform 70% sedentary work, exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and exert negligible force frequently or constantly to move objects, including the body. May be asked to exert up to 20 pounds of force periodically, as needed.
- Field of vision must be adequate to observe up and down or right to left while eyes are fixed on a given point.
- Ability to process written and other materials visually.
- Physical efforts required include fingering, repetitive small motor activity, grasping, verbally communicating detailed and important information to others quickly and accurately, stooping, reaching, standing, lifting light objects under ten pounds frequently, and climbing occasionally.
- Requires ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, perceiving the nature of sounds with no less than a 40 dB loss at 500 Hz, and 2000 Hz without correction.
Responsibilities
SALES:
- Answers incoming calls, within three rings, positively and warmly.
- Prequalifies, analyzes prospects’ personal and small commercial coverage needs.
- Recommends coverage and prepares rating quotes and proposals to sell new accounts.
- Educates prospects/customers as to coverage limitation and documents on the agency management system.
- Completes applications for insurance and has insured sign them.
- Submits to eligible and appropriate carriers, and follows up to ensure timely receipt of policies or quotations.
- Prepares, requests and delivers binder to insured and/or additional interests.
- Educates customers concerning agency/company payment expectations, claim reporting, and agency Service Center.
- Develops new business that is profitable for both the agency and carriers.
- Actively seeks referrals from current customer base to solicit for new business prospects; follows up to generate new business using prospect data base and system.
- Actively refers customers to Life & Benefits and Large Commercial Lines department for solicitation of new business.
RETENTION:
- Processes remarkets, as needed.
- Creates letters to customers offering coverage, share information and advice regarding insurance matters. Uses these to round out accounts fully.
Branch Offices Only
- Handles direct-billed “walk-in” payments. Verifies coverage status, processes as appropriate, and provides receipt in accordance with agency standards.
- Handles “walk-in” customers with making coverage changes and completes service request for clients; suspends to Policy Services for follow up.
- Generates documents and produces correspondence to satisfy customer service requests or accepts and handles any duties/prospects as assigned by agency management.
PERSONAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT:
- Sets priorities and manages workflow to ensure efficient, timely and accurate processing of new business and other responsibilities.
- Keeps informed regarding industry information, new product information, coverages and technology to continuously improve knowledge and stay current.
- Participates in seminars and classes for skill and knowledge development.
- Interacts with others effectively by utilizing good communication skills; cooperates positively and provides information and guidance, as needed to contribute to the business efforts of the agency.
- Maintains and updates technical manuals and understands its use to perform technical tasks and expedite customer service.
