Public Health Nurse - Communicable Disease


Job Overview

The Callaway County Health Department is seeking a dedicated and motivated Public Health Nurse specializing in Communicable Disease. This position is responsible for investigating, monitoring, and controlling the spread of infectious diseases within the community. The ideal candidate will promote public health through education, case management, surveillance, and collaboration with local, state, and healthcare partners.

This role requires strong clinical judgment, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work independently while supporting broader public health initiatives.

The starting salary range for this position is $50,000 - $65,000 annually (or $24.04 - $31.25 per hour) and it comes with a full benefits package, including free health insurance, paid vacation/sick/holiday leave, two retirement programs, free life insurance policies, and much more.

The normal business hours for this position is Monday through Friday from 8:00am - 4:30pm, with weekends and holidays off. However, there may be some events throughout the year that would require working outside of normal business hours.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

• Current Registered Nurse (RN) license preferred

• Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) may be considered with extensive communicable disease, public health, or related clinical experience

• Strong understanding of infection control principles and disease prevention

• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel within the county as needed


Preferred Qualifications:


• Previous experience in public health nursing, epidemiology, infection control, or acute care

• Experience with disease investigation, contact tracing, and case management

• Familiarity with Missouri communicable disease reporting systems and protocols

• Strong organizational and documentation skills

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Conduct communicable disease investigations, including case interviews and contact tracing

• Coordinate follow-up and monitoring of reportable diseases in accordance with state and local guidelines

• Maintain accurate and timely documentation of cases and investigations

• Educate patients, families, and the community on disease prevention and control measures

• Collaborate with healthcare providers, schools, and community partners to manage disease outbreaks

• Provide vaccination and immunization guidance as needed

• Participate in outbreak response efforts, including after-hours response when necessary

• Ensure compliance with state reporting requirements and public health regulations

• Assist with health education initiatives and community outreach programs

Work Environment:



This position operates in both office and community settings. The role may require field work, home visits, or response during communicable disease outbreaks. Exposure to infectious diseases is possible; appropriate safety protocols and equipment will be provided.
